Londons wichtigster Platz, ein zentraler Treffpunkt
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Auf dem Trafalgar Square<\/strong> herrscht immer ein buntes Treiben. Und das schon seit Urzeiten, genauer seit dem Mittelalter ist es ist der gr\u00f6\u00dfte \u00f6ffentliche Platz in der Stadtmitte der Metropole London<\/a>. Die Stra\u00dfen Whitehall<\/strong>, The Mall<\/strong> und Pall Mall<\/strong> laufen hier zusammen.<\/p>\n

Auf dem Platz und drumherum gibt es einige monumentale Geb\u00e4ude <\/strong>und Denkm\u00e4ler <\/strong>von besonderer Bedeutung.<\/p>\n

Ein paar davon stellen wir Ihnen einfach mal vor.<\/p>\n


\nDie National Gallery London<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n


\nNational Gallery London<\/em><\/p>\n

Eines der imposantesten Geb\u00e4ude ist die National Gallery London<\/strong>, und das zu Recht. Es handelt sich n\u00e4mlich um das wichtigste Kunstmuseum der Welt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Der Besucher sollte viel Zeit mitbringen, immerhin gibt es rund 2.300 Werke vom 13. bis 19. Jahrhundert.
\nSeit 1824 gibt es die National Gallery<\/strong>, damals allerdings im Haus des Bankiers John Julius Angerstein<\/strong>, dessen Sammlung der erste Grundstock f\u00fcr das Museum war. Erst 1837 wurde das Geb\u00e4ude am Trafalgar Square<\/strong> von William Wilkins<\/strong> errichtet.<\/p>\n

In der National Gallery<\/strong> finden Sie unter anderem Werke von Joachim Beuckelaer, Sandro Boticelli, Willem Drost, Jan van Eyck, Vincent van Gogh, Frans Hals, Hans Holbein dem J\u00fcngeren, Claude Monet, Rembrandt van Rijn, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong> und Joseph Wright of Derby<\/strong> \u2013 um nur einige wenige zu nennen.
\nDie st\u00e4ndige Gem\u00e4ldeausstellung <\/strong>kann \u00fcbrigens kostenfrei besucht werden.<\/p>\n


\nDie Nelson-S\u00e4ule oder nelson column<\/strong><\/p>\n

Im Jahr 1805 fand Admiral Horatio Nelson<\/strong> den Tod in der Schlacht von Trafalgar. Ihm zu Ehren wurde in den Jahren 1840 bis 1843 auf dem Trafalgar Square<\/strong> ein Denkmal der besonderen Art erbaut.
\nAuf einem Sockel von 46 m steht stolz Nelson <\/strong>selber, und zwar 5,5 m hoch.
\nSein Blick geht nach S\u00fcden, Richtung Westminster-Palast<\/strong> und der Stra\u00dfe Pall Mall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rund um das Podest erinnern vier bronzene Tafeln <\/strong>an seine vier gro\u00dfen Siege.
\nDie H\u00f6he von \u00fcber 51 m ist \u00fcbrigens nicht von ungef\u00e4hr, genau so hoch war Nelsons Flaggschiff HMS Victory<\/strong> vom Kiel bis zur Mastspitze.<\/p>\n


\nDie vier bronzenen L\u00f6wen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rund um die Nelson-S\u00e4ule<\/strong> liegen 4 bronzene L\u00f6wen<\/strong>.
\n1867 hat der Maler und Bildhauer Sir Edwin Landseer<\/strong> diese erschaffen.
\nLandseer hatte so seine Schwierigkeiten mit den L\u00f6wen, wollten sie ihm doch nicht so recht gelingen. Also hat er sich kurzerhand vom Londoner Zoo<\/strong> ein toten L\u00f6wen schicken lassen.
\nTrotzdem dauerte die Erschaffung der L\u00f6wen viel l\u00e4nger, als geplant und die Presse machte sich schon lustig \u00fcber den K\u00fcnstler.
\nHeute geh\u00f6ren sie als fester Bestandteil einfach zum Trafalgar Square<\/strong>.
\nVor allem von Kindern werden sie hei\u00df und innig geliebt. Jeder m\u00f6chte einmal auf einem L\u00f6wen sitzen und fotografiert werden – und wie man sieht, nicht nur die Kinder.<\/p>\n

Einer Legende <\/strong>zur Folge, sollen die L\u00f6wen zum Leben erwachen, wenn der Big Ben<\/a><\/strong> 13 mal schl\u00e4gt.
\nUnd siehe da \u2013 es geschah im Dezember 2008: der Big Ben schlug 13 mal und einer der L\u00f6wen fing an zu sprechen. Allerdings sagte er nichts mystisches oder geheimnisvolles, sondern machte \u2013 durch digitale Animation \u2013 Werbung f\u00fcr Weihnachtsangebote der Stadt.
\nWarten wir einfach auf den n\u00e4chsten 13. Glockenschlag<\/strong> des Big Ben<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n


\nAdmiralty Arch<\/strong><\/p>\n

Die Durchfahrt vom belebten Trafalgar Square<\/strong> zur Prachtstra\u00dfe The Mall<\/strong> und damit zum Buckingham-Palast<\/a><\/strong> wird gebildet durch einen 1910 errichten Triumphbogen <\/strong>\u2013 dem Admiralty Arch<\/strong>.
\nAllerdings ist dieser Bogen nicht f\u00fcr den normalen Verkehr gedacht, sondern wird lediglich bei feierlichen Anl\u00e4ssen und Staatsakten <\/strong>als extravagante und elegante Durchfahrt genutzt.<\/p>\n


\n
\nVictoria Memorial<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wie schon erw\u00e4hnt erreicht man, wenn man den Trafalgar Square<\/strong> \u00fcber die Stra\u00dfe The Mall<\/strong> verl\u00e4sst, irgendwann den Buckingham-Palast<\/a><\/strong>.
\nUnd hier, direkt vor dem Palast, steht das Victoria Memorial<\/strong>.
\nDiese Monument zu Ehren von K\u00f6nigin Victoria<\/strong> von Gro\u00dfbritannien misst ganze 26 m. Hoch oben prangt die vergoldete Siegesg\u00f6ttin <\/strong>und unter dieser, auf dem Sockel des Denkmals, thronen bedeutungsvolle Frauengestalten<\/strong>.
\nEntworfen wurde das Victoria Memorial<\/strong> von Sir Aston Webb<\/strong>, der Bildhauer Thomas Brock<\/strong> hat den Entwurf umgesetzt und 1911 wurde es enth\u00fcllt.<\/p>\n

Aber es gibt noch viel mehr zu sehen auf dem Trafalgar Square<\/strong>.
\nSo z.B. am s\u00fcdlichen Ende Standbilder der Gener\u00e4le Napier <\/strong>und Havelock<\/strong>, im Norden ein Reiterstandbild Georg IV<\/strong> oder am Fu\u00dfe der Treppe zur National Gallery eine Bronzeb\u00fcste von Admiral Cunningham<\/strong>.
\nAuch die Kirche St. Martin-in-the-Fields<\/strong> befindet sich am Trafalgar Square.
\nAuf der Westseite, im 1827 erbauten Canada House<\/strong>, ist die kanadische Botschaft zu finden und auf der Ostseite im South Africa House<\/strong> die S\u00fcdafrikanische Botschaft.<\/p>\n
